Enhanced External Counterpulsation

(EECP)

Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is a non-invasive procedure for patients with angina or known coronary artery disease.  EECP is an outpatient treatment, and is performed over 35 sessions which take an hour each.

When you arrive on the first day of EECP treatment, you will be interviewed by a technician experienced in the use of the EECP technology.  The procedure will be explained and any questions will be answered.  You will also be given a pair of specialized pants that will be used during the treatments.

During the procedure you will lie on a table while pressure cuffs are placed on your calves and thighs.  Electrodes will be attached to your chest and your heartbeat will be monitored by a computer.  When the computer detects a contraction the pressure cuffs will inflate and deflate in time with the heartbeat.  The high pressure from this inflation causes blood to feed back into the heart muscle and help create new blood vessels.

PREPARATION

-No preparation necessary.

-Bring supplied pants to each session.
